Roman Rutishauser: Tenebrae
Paul Giger: Karma Shadub

Former members of the Hilliard Ensemble and ECM recording artist Paul Giger perform the UK Premiere of ‘Tenebrae’ by the Swiss musician Roman Rutishauser, who composed the piece specifically for these musicians. This special one-off charity concert is in aid of Community Action Nepal.

This dramatic composition, which defies stylistic categorisation, uses seven texts from the Tenebrae and creates an unusual soundscape by using the a cappella instrumentation customary in the Renaissance with alto, tenor, baritone and deep bass voices combined with a single improvising violin. The piece encompasses meditative sound worlds of harrowing harmonious beauty, elements of rhythmic tension and free improvisation from the vocal ensemble.

This is a rare opportunity to hear the former members of the world famous Hilliard Ensemble, who were highly regarded for their traditional repertoire and performances of contemporary music with artists like Arvo Pärt and Jan Garbarek. The Swiss violinist Paul Giger studied has worked since 1983 as a soloist, with half a dozen albums for ECM. He has also worked with Jan Garbarek, Marie-Louise Dähler and the Hilliard Ensemble.

‘Rutishauser is a master of the small form, of the truly beautiful, moving choral movements, in an almost catchy postmodern and at the same time spiritually inspired musical language. It is a real delight to listen to the British gentlemen in this group, with their harmonies as clear as bells and some impressive vocal techniques and solos.’ – Mark Liebenberg

‘A 70 minute sound extravaganza which is incomparable in its combination of old and new music’

‘Paul Giger is a master of his instrument on all levels’ – Der Bund
