Described by The Times as ‘one of the most thoughtful and sensitive of British pianists’, Mishka Rushdie Momen is known for her performances of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. However, she also has a special interest in Renaissance music. Tonight, she plays William Byrd’s arrangement of Dowland’s lovely pavan for solo lute and also John Bull’s Walsingham Variations. The Ballad of Walsingham, about the shrine and centre of pilgrimage in Walsingham in Norfolk, was a popular tune in medieval England and both Byrd and his younger rival Bull composed variations on it.

Moving on from the sixteenth century, Mishka plays one of Schubert’s most introspective sonatas, a cheering rondo by Mozart, a brilliant set of variations by Mendelssohn and the third to last of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, an experiment with sonata form that ends in a theme and six variations, to be played according to his instructions ‘songfully, with the utmost feeling.’

Mishka Rushdie Momen studied with Joan Havill and Imogen Cooper at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She also studied periodically with Richard Goode, and at the Kronberg Academy with Sir András Schiff, who has presented her in recital and orchestral dates across the USA and Europe.
