Scottish pianist Steven Osborne’s insightful and idiomatic interpretations of diverse repertoire show an immense musical depth. In 2013 he was awarded the title Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year.

Steven Osborne has worked with conductors including Christoph von Dohnanyi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sakari Oramo, Andrew Litton and Vasily Petrenko. Summer 2017 saw him give the world premiere of Julian Anderson’s Piano Concerto The Imaginary Museum – a piece written for and dedicated to Stevenin his fourteenth appearance at the BBC Proms. As a recitalist, he performs in the world’s most prestigious venues and is a regular guest at London’s Wigmore Hall.

For his previous visit to SJE Arts three years ago, Steven programmed Beethoven and Brahms. Tonight, along with Schubert’s delicate Andante in A major, he performs the composer’s penultimate piano sonata, written during the last months of Schubert’s life and reflecting his mental state. The second movement, in particular, has been described variously as ‘a composed hallucination’ (Jonathan Biss) and as having ‘a desolate grace behind which madness lies’ (Alfred Brendel).

Following the interval, Steven Osborne turns to Russia and Rachmaninov, performing the Nunc Dimittis, an arrangement from the choral All Night Vigil, and some short pieces composed before Rachmaninov left Russia in 1918. To close the concert, Steven presents a much earlier composition, Six Moments Musicaux, in which each movement is written in the form characteristic of a previous musical era. We look forward to his interpretations and welcome him back most warmly.

Season Pass tickets to all remaining concerts in the 7th Series are available at a near 50% discount.
